West Bengal's CM urged India's top judge to defend democracy, judiciary, and fair trials during a high court bench inauguration.
West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee urged Chief Justice of India Surya Kant to protect the Constitution, judiciary, and democracy during the inauguration of the Jalpaiguri Circuit Bench of the Calcutta High Court.
She called for safeguards against wrongful targeting by agencies, criticized media trials before legal resolutions, and emphasized judicial impartiality.
Banerjee highlighted her state’s establishment of 88 fast-track courts despite halted central funding, spending over Rs 1,200 crore, and noted the new Rs 500 crore Jalpaiguri building on 40.08 acres.
She also mentioned a planned high court complex in Rajarhat.
The event included senior judges and Union Law Minister Arjun Ram Meghwal.
