UNHCR chief urges global aid for 900,000 Sudanese refugees in Chad amid worsening crisis.
UN High Commissioner for Refugees Barham Salih, on his first overseas trip since taking office, urged the international community to increase humanitarian aid and long-term support for over 900,000 Sudanese refugees in eastern Chad, calling the crisis in Sudan a "massive humanitarian catastrophe."
Speaking after visiting refugee camps, Salih highlighted dire living conditions, trauma, and inadequate access to shelter, water, sanitation, and mental health services.
He praised Chad’s generosity in hosting refugees despite economic and environmental strain, stressing that the country cannot bear the burden alone.
Salih emphasized the need for sustained funding, inclusive policies, and structural support to enable refugees to rebuild lives and contribute to host communities, while UNHCR reaffirmed its commitment to long-term solutions.
