Severe Dec. 2025 floods in B.C. and Alberta caused $90M in insured damage, mainly in Abbotsford’s Fraser Valley.
Severe flooding in December 2025 across southern British Columbia and Alberta caused nearly $90 million in insured damage, with $74 million attributed to B.C.’s Fraser Valley, primarily affecting homes, businesses, and farmland in Abbotsford.
The floods, triggered by heavy rains and overflow from Washington state, led to evacuations and damage to poultry barns.
Despite a provincial flood strategy introduced after the 2021 floods, the Insurance Bureau of Canada says it remains underfunded and urges increased investment in flood mapping, infrastructure, and property preparedness, noting prevention is more cost-effective than rebuilding.
The bureau also highlights that stronger mitigation efforts could expand access to flood insurance, offering better support than government disaster aid.
