MP CM visits Bhopal gas tragedy site after toxic waste from Union Carbide plant was incinerated under court order.
Madhya Pradesh Chief Minister Mohan Yadav visited the 1984 Bhopal gas tragedy site on January 17, 2026, following the completion of a court-ordered disposal of 337 metric tonnes of toxic waste.
The waste, stored at the former Union Carbide plant for decades, was transported to Pithampur and fully incinerated by June 30, 2025, after a trial run and delays due to public concerns.
The incineration, conducted under judicial oversight, marks a major step in cleaning up the legacy of the world’s worst industrial disaster, which killed thousands and injured hundreds of thousands when methyl isocyanate gas leaked from the plant.
The CM’s visit included discussions on ongoing environmental and health issues affecting the area.
