Mitsubishi buys U.S. shale gas assets for $5.2B to boost energy supply for Asia and Europe.
In its biggest transaction to date, Mitsubishi Corp. has agreed to pay Aethon Energy Management $5.2 billion for U.S. shale gas assets in Texas and Louisiana. The acquisition includes operations in the Haynesville Shale formation, which produces roughly 15 million tons of LNG a year, or 2.1 billion cubic feet of gas per day. The deal increases Mitsubishi's presence throughout the energy value chain, including upstream production, midstream infrastructure, and possible LNG exports to Asia and Europe. It is anticipated to close in the April–June 2026 quarter, pending regulatory approval. The action is in line with the expanding global demand brought on by AI and the expansion of data centers, and it supports Japan's energy security strategy.
