A man died in a high-speed crash during a sheriff’s pursuit after fleeing a stop attempt in Tuolumne County on Jan. 15, 2026.
A 37-year-old man, Gideon Guy Griffin of Angels Camp, died in a high-speed vehicle crash during a pursuit by Tuolumne County Sheriff’s deputies on January 15, 2026.
The chase began after deputies observed Griffin checking doors at a closed business and carrying bags, prompting a stop attempt.
He fled, speeding and crossing into oncoming traffic, before veering off Highway 108 near South Sunshine Road, striking a sign and crashing into a ditch.
He was pronounced dead at the scene.
A warrant for post-release community supervision was active at the time.
The California Highway Patrol is investigating, with no further details released.
