On January 17, 2026, at least 80 militants from Cross River State’s Calabar creeks and Akpabuyo LGA surrendered weapons and equipment to the Nigerian Army under a state amnesty program.
The surrender, occurring at Atimbo Rear Area during Operation OKWOK, involved two factions led by ThankGod Ebikontei and John Isaac, who handed over AK-47s, pump-action guns, speedboats, engines, explosives, and other arms.
The 13 Brigade commander credited sustained military operations and collaboration with state and federal agencies for the success.
The former fighters were transferred to the state’s Rapid Response Team and are being profiled by the Department of State Services in Calabar.
