India launches commercial bio-bitumen from farm waste, cutting emissions and boosting rural income.
India has become the first country to commercially produce bio-bitumen from agricultural waste like sugarcane bagasse and wheat straw using CSIR-developed pyrolysis technology, Union Minister Nitin Gadkari announced in Madhya Pradesh.
The innovation, licensed to 15 companies, aims to replace imported petroleum-based bitumen, cut carbon emissions by up to 70%, reduce stubble burning, and create new rural income streams.
Pilot projects confirm the material performs comparably to conventional bitumen, supporting India’s net-zero 2070 goal and Viksit Bharat 2047 vision.
