India begins nationwide dolphin survey under Project Dolphin to update population and habitat data.
India has launched its second nationwide survey of riverine and estuarine dolphins under Project Dolphin, beginning in Bijnor, Uttar Pradesh.
Coordinated by the Wildlife Institute of India with state forest departments and conservation groups, the effort uses hydrophones and standardized field methods to assess dolphin populations across the Ganga, Indus, Brahmaputra, and coastal regions, including new areas for the Irrawaddy dolphin.
The survey builds on the 2021–23 estimate of 6,327 riverine dolphins and aims to update data on species distribution, habitat conditions, and threats like pollution and sand mining, supporting science-based conservation planning.
