Google is appealing a 2024 court ruling that found it maintained an illegal monopoly in online search, asking a judge to delay enforcing data-sharing requirements with competitors, including AI firms, while the appeal proceeds.
The company argues compliance could expose sensitive trade secrets without remedy if it wins on appeal, though it agrees to other remedies like limiting exclusive app-preloading contracts to one year.
The U.S. Department of Justice and a coalition of states have until February 3 to decide whether to appeal Judge Amit Mehta’s rejection of more drastic measures, such as forcing Google to sell Chrome or end major payments to Apple and others to remain the default search engine.
Despite the ruling, Google has avoided major structural changes.
