BREC will cut 10% of staff, freeze hires, and explore privatization to ensure long-term sustainability.
BREC, the East Baton Rouge Parish recreation and park commission, announced on January 16, 2026, that it will lay off 10% of its workforce, impose a temporary hiring freeze on non-critical roles, and pursue privatization of certain operations to improve efficiency and long-term sustainability.
The changes follow a review identifying less essential positions and come amid broader organizational restructuring after a 2025 state law altered the commission’s membership.
BREC is also evaluating retirement benefits and forming partnerships to manage aquatics and security.
Interim Superintendent Janet Simmons said the steps, while difficult, are necessary to responsibly manage public funds and maintain services.
BREC recortará 10% del personal, congelará las contrataciones y explorará la privatización para garantizar la sostenibilidad a largo plazo.
