Staff Sgt.
Nicholas J. Governale, a 22-year-old U.S. Army Air Forces gunner, was accounted for 82 years after his B-25C Mitchell bomber crashed off Guadalcanal on July 10, 1943.
Declared nonrecoverable in 1949, his name was on the Walls of the Missing at the Manila American Cemetery.
In 2017, the DPAA and Project Recover found wreckage near Koli Point.
After years of recovery and analysis, his identity was confirmed in May 2025.
His remains were returned, and a rosette now marks his name as accounted for, fulfilling a promise to never leave a service member behind.
