UK workers aged 18–24 report rising stress-related absences, with 39% taking time off due to mental health issues in 2026.
A 2026 survey by Mental Health UK found that 39% of UK workers aged 18 to 24 took time off due to stress-related mental health issues, up 3% from the previous year, with 93% in that age group reporting high or extreme stress.
Factors include heavy workloads, fear of redundancy, isolation, poor sleep, and financial worries.
Despite rising awareness, only 17% had a formal return-to-work plan and 27% received no support after returning.
The report also found menopausal symptoms contributed to burnout for many women, and warned that unaddressed workplace stress hinders economic growth, urging employers to improve mental health support and early intervention.
