Derek McCormick, a 28-year veteran, has been charged with stealing government-issued IDs, bank cards, and passports delivered to the police department but not properly logged.
Authorities say the thefts occurred multiple times in October, with some items previously reported stolen.
McCormick faces four counts of theft under $5,000, one count of breach of trust, and one count of obstructing justice.
He has been suspended with pay and is scheduled to appear in Ontario Court of Justice.
The Toronto Police Service confirmed the arrest and that the case is under investigation by internal affairs and the Crown.
