The European Commission has approved Romania’s EUR 16.68 billion defense plan under the SAFE programme, the second-largest allocation among eight EU nations receiving about EUR 38 billion in total.
The funding, part of a 150 billion euro initiative, will support modern military equipment, infrastructure like the Moldova Motorway, defense industry development, and job creation.
The Council has four weeks to approve the decision, after which loan agreements will be finalized and first payments expected by March 2026.
The SAFE programme, launched in May 2025 under Readiness 2030, aims to strengthen European defense through joint procurement, interoperability, and deeper integration with Ukraine and other partners.
