Himachal Pradesh Chief Minister Sukhvinder Singh Sukhu has urged the Union Government to impose a 100% import duty and ban apple imports during peak production months (July to November) to protect local farmers.
Speaking in New Delhi, he called for apples to be placed in a 'special category' to shield over 2.5 lakh small and marginal growers from foreign competition, citing a surge in imports from New Zealand under a trade agreement.
He warned that falling prices due to foreign supply, especially during off-seasons, are harming rural livelihoods and urged immediate policy changes, including quantitative restrictions and higher duties, to safeguard the state’s Rs.
4,500 crore apple industry.
