The annual charity herring sale in British Columbia has resumed after sea lions disrupted the initial catch, consuming much of the herring over two nights in the Northumberland Channel.
Fishermen, including veteran Bob Fraumeni, had to release nets to protect the endangered animals, but later secured a 75-tonne haul from a sea lion-free school.
The fish are now being sold on the Steveston waterfront and at a Victoria restaurant, with proceeds supporting BC Children’s Hospital.
Organizers noted increased sea lion aggression this year and used decoy boats to distract them.
Volunteers and fishermen described the effort as both challenging and deeply meaningful, driven by heartfelt messages from families affected by childhood cancer.
