A fire in Seoul’s Guryong Village killed no one but forced 47 evacuations; cause unknown.
A major fire broke out in Guryong Village, a densely populated informal settlement in Seoul’s Gangnam district, on January 16, 2026, around 5:10 a.m. Nearly 300 firefighters and 85 fire trucks responded, with the alert raised to the second-highest level due to fears the blaze could spread to a nearby mountain.
No injuries or fatalities were reported, but 47 residents were evacuated from the area, where about 110 people lived.
The settlement, composed of flammable makeshift homes, has long faced safety risks despite redevelopment plans.
A helicopter could not be deployed due to poor air quality from haze and fine dust.
The cause remains under investigation.
