A Dublin driving instructor was jailed for 12 months for taking 21 fake driver tests using fake IDs.
Daniel Trifan, a 51-year-old former Dublin driving instructor and HGV driver, was sentenced to 12 months in prison for taking 21 driver theory tests on behalf of others between June and November 2019.
He pleaded guilty to fraud, using fake Romanian ID cards to impersonate test takers as part of a larger scheme that ran from 2018 to 2021, during which 124 fraudulent tests were conducted.
Trifan, paid about €150 per test, claimed he was in financial and emotional distress and felt threatened when trying to leave the operation.
Five others have been jailed, and the ringleader remains at large.
Judge Orla Crowe emphasized the threat to public safety, noting Trifan’s qualifications made him well-suited for the fraud, and backdated the sentence to his arrest in Cyprus in September 2024 under a European Arrest Warrant.
