A black scarf honoring 344 mining victims was stolen from a memorial in Westhoughton days before the 100th anniversary.
A black scarf, traditionally placed annually by Westhoughton’s mayor on the Pretoria Pit memorial to honor the 344 victims of the 1910 mining disaster, has been stolen.
The scarf, symbolizing the miners’ coal-stained clothing and marking a solemn remembrance, was removed from the statue in Ditchfield Gardens just days before the 100th anniversary of the tragedy.
Westhoughton Mayor Gillian Wroe expressed deep sorrow, emphasizing the gesture’s emotional and historical significance for descendants and the community.
The memorial, designed by local sculptor Jane Robbins, bears the names of all victims and stands near the former mine shaft.
Authorities are urging the public to provide information about the theft.
