While cycling near Fangqiao village, he heard cries for help, jumped into the freezing river, and swam against the current to reach the struggling man.
Despite a steep, slippery bank, he kept the man upright and swam across the river, eventually grabbing a rescue pole thrown by a village official.
Both were pulled to safety after about 10 minutes, with firefighters later bringing the man ashore.
He was hospitalized but recovered.
