A UPS MD-11 crash in Nov. 2025 was linked to a known engine mount flaw that failed on five planes, including the crashed one, despite prior warnings and inspections.
According to the NTSB, a crucial engine mount component on a UPS MD-11 cargo plane that crashed in November 2025 close to Louisville, Kentucky, had previously failed on four other aircraft.
In a 2011 service letter, Boeing warned of fatigue cracks in the spherical bearing race—a component that connects the engine to the wing—but did not consider the problem to be a safety-of-flight concern.
On the crashed aircraft, which had passed a visual inspection in 2021 and wasn't scheduled for a thorough inspection for thousands of additional flights, the part failed in the same spot.
The NTSB is looking into whether Boeing's maintenance protocols and guidance were adequate; a final report is anticipated in 18 to 24 months.
