Rosebud Sioux Tribal President Kathleen Wooden Knife, in her 2026 State of the Tribes Address, called for stronger state-tribal collaboration on healthcare, public safety, and infrastructure, urging quarterly meetings between tribal leaders and state officials.
She highlighted urgent needs including improved healthcare access, with life expectancy among Lakota people far below national averages, and pushed for state recognition of tribal police and implementation of an Indian Managed Healthcare model under Medicaid.
Over twenty tribal officers have completed state certification, and a task force bill to study the healthcare model has support from the state tribal relations committee and lawmakers.
