The shortage worsened after the pandemic.
House Bill 2 provided $3.5 billion to raise teacher pay, with larger districts offering up to $5,000 for experienced teachers and smaller districts offering more—$8,000—to attract staff to underfunded areas.
However, 55% of teachers hired last year were uncertified, prompting efforts to streamline certification, which requires a bachelor’s degree, training, exams, application, and fingerprinting.
Despite these steps, recruiting remains difficult.
