Republican lawmakers introduce bill to tighten student visa rules amid security and fraud concerns.
Republican Congressman Brandon Gill of Texas has introduced the Student Visa Integrity Act to strengthen oversight of the U.S. student visa program, citing national security concerns, visa overstays, and fraud.
The bill proposes fixed visa end dates, expanded in-person interviews, restrictions on program transfers, and stricter penalties—including prison time—for schools or officials involved in fraud.
It would ban nationals from adversarial countries like China and Iran from studying in the U.S. and require universities to disclose ties to the Chinese government.
A companion Senate bill was introduced by Republican Sen. Tommy Tuberville.
The legislation follows a 2023 report showing about 50,000 visa overstays and criticism that the 20-year-old SEVIS tracking system hasn't kept pace with over 1.5 million foreign students, up from 750,000 in 2012.
The bill has support from conservative groups and co-sponsors in Congress.
