The Northern Territory has opened its first dedicated women’s prison at Darwin Correctional Precinct, a new 88-bed facility for low-security female inmates, effective January 19, 2026.
The $8 million upgrade, part of a broader corrections overhaul, separates women from male prisoners to improve safety and reduce trauma from past harassment.
The facility includes classrooms, vocational training, and recreational spaces.
Higher-security female inmates will remain in the existing women’s sector until a new Alice Springs prison opens in early 2026.
The government also plans additional facilities in Holtze and Katherine, with education programs being reinstated amid a rising female prison population.
As of January 8, 174 women were in custody across the NT.
