New Zealand plans to use drones in the Pacific for maritime surveillance, part of a $12 billion defense boost.
New Zealand’s Ministry of Defence is seeking input on deploying surveillance drones across the Pacific to boost maritime monitoring in its exclusive economic zone and support regional partners, part of a $100 million to $300 million project under the 2025 Defence Capability Plan.
The initiative, which may consider other solutions, aims to enhance long-range surveillance and is tied to a broader $12 billion defense upgrade over four years.
Defense spending is projected to rise from over 1% to more than 2% of GDP within eight years, the highest level since the early 1990s.
A business case will be developed later this year based on expert feedback.
