New Plymouth begins soil tests for a $289 million wastewater upgrade to prevent future sewage spills.
Ground-testing has begun in Bell Block, New Plymouth, to assess soil conditions ahead of a $289 million, 10-year wastewater upgrade aimed at preventing sewage overflows into the Mangati Stream.
Starting January 19, the three-week phase includes drilling boreholes and installing monitoring equipment, with silt control measures in place and the Mangati Walkway remaining open.
Data will inform the design of underground emergency storage, to be built in 2026/27.
The project addresses past overflows during power outages or heavy rain, including a 2019 incident that harmed fish.
The council maintains 34 pump stations, 7,000 manholes, and nearly 700km of pipes.
Treated wastewater from several areas is processed at the New Plymouth Wastewater Treatment Plant and released as clean effluent or converted into fertilizer.
