Maryland won’t charge Baltimore officers in Dontae Melton Jr.’s 2025 death during mental health crisis.
The Maryland Attorney General’s Office has decided not to file criminal charges against Baltimore police officers involved in the June 24, 2025, death of Dontae Melton Jr., a 31-year-old man experiencing a mental health crisis.
Officers approached Melton as he walked into traffic, restrained him, and waited nearly 40 minutes for medical help after he became unresponsive.
He died six hours later at a hospital.
The state medical examiner ruled the death a homicide.
The family and Melton’s attorney criticized the decision, calling it a failure of accountability and highlighting systemic issues in police response to mental health crises and emergency dispatch failures.
