flag A majority of Americans disapprove of Trump's foreign policy, especially his Venezuela intervention, with 56% saying he's gone too far.

A new AP-NORC poll from January 8–11, 2026, finds that 56% of U.S. adults believe President Donald Trump has gone too far in using military force abroad, particularly after the U.S. intervention in Venezuela that led to the capture of President Nicolás Maduro. While about half see the operation as helpful in reducing drug trafficking, opinions are divided on its impact on national security and the economy. Disapproval of Trump’s foreign policy stands at 61%, and 57% disapprove of his Venezuela handling. Democrats and independents are most critical, with 90% and 60% respectively saying he has overstepped, compared to 71% of Republicans who view his actions as “about right.” Nearly half of Americans want the U.S. to take a less active role globally, a shift from earlier in the year.
