Iowa's top judge demands higher pay for judges and public defenders and system reforms to save money and improve fairness.
Iowa Supreme Court Chief Justice Susan Christensen urged lawmakers to raise judge and public defender pay and overhaul the state’s magistrate system during her 2026 Condition of the Judiciary address.
She cited low salaries affecting recruitment and retention, noting a recent district court opening drew only two applicants.
Christensen also called for consolidating the magistrate system, which currently has 206 magistrates—many underutilized—arguing reforms could save at least $2.5 million annually and improve efficiency and fairness.
