Illinois seeks $350M more for schools amid $2.2B deficit, but advocates say it’s still insufficient.
The Illinois State Board of Education has recommended a $350 million increase in state funding for public schools, along with $151 million for key programs, citing the state’s projected $2.2 billion fiscal deficit.
The request, aligned with minimum annual increases since 2017, aims to stabilize funding for special education transportation and vocational programs, which have seen reduced state support.
Despite the proposal, advocates warn it falls short of meeting student needs, with full funding under the current formula not expected until 2042.
The final budget decision will be made by lawmakers by late May, with Governor JB Pritzker’s proposal expected in February.
