Georgia reports its first 2026 avian flu case at a poultry farm, triggering quarantine and depopulation.
A highly pathogenic avian influenza case has been confirmed at a commercial poultry farm in Walker County, Georgia, marking the state’s first outbreak of 2026 and the fourth since the national outbreak began in 2022.
The farm, housing about 71,264 broiler breeders, reported increased bird deaths starting January 11, leading to sample collection and confirmation on January 12.
State officials immediately quarantined the site and all nearby poultry operations within a 6.2-mile radius, initiating depopulation, cleaning, and disinfection.
Surveillance testing will continue for at least two weeks.
No human cases have been reported, and officials confirm the food supply remains safe.
