A 62-year-old man from the Batchewana First Nation was fined $500 for possessing 10 grams of fentanyl, following a March 16, 2025, traffic stop on Highway 17 in Ontario. The substance was confirmed by Health Canada, and the charge was pleaded guilty to in Sault Ste. Marie court. Justice Simon Armstrong called fentanyl a significant public health threat. The fine, agreed upon by both sides, is due within one year. The man has a prior record of five impaired driving convictions and a history of substance abuse.
