A Dublin park entrance upgrade, costing €753,500, was delayed and overspent due to hidden site issues, despite aiming to improve access for disabled people and families.
A new entrance with 14 steps and a ramp at Deer Park in Mount Merrion, South Dublin, cost €753,500—over €500,000 more than the original €200,000 estimate.
Funded by the National Transport Authority (NTA), the project aimed to improve access for people with mobility impairments, cyclists, and parents with buggies, replacing a stair-only entrance.
Unforeseen site conditions, including tree roots and hidden high-voltage cables, led to design changes and increased costs.
While a 2024 council report cited a potential cost of up to €935,200, the NTA said this was a hypothetical figure not realized.
The project links the park to a nearby primary school and church.
