Skeletal remains found in Geneseo, Illinois, in 1966 have been identified as Ronald Joe Cole, a 19-year-old from Fillmore, California, who vanished in 1965.
DNA analysis by the Henry County Sheriff’s Office and the DNA Doe Project matched the remains to Cole’s family, including a living brother.
The case, previously unsolved, involved a gunshot wound and no personal items.
Cole’s half-brother, David La Fever, was a suspect but was never charged.
La Fever died in 2007.
Authorities continue investigating the murder, though no suspect has been named.
The identification brings closure after nearly 60 years.
