ConocoPhillips confirms second gas find at Charlemont-1 in Australia, boosting prospects for Victoria’s gas supply.
ConocoPhillips has confirmed a second natural gas discovery at the Charlemont-1 well in Australia’s Otway Basin, offshore Victoria, finding gas in the Waarre C sandstone with 16 mol% carbon dioxide, similar to the nearby La Bella field.
Elevated gas readings in the Waarre A sandstone suggest potential additional reserves, though further evaluation is needed.
The find supports the Charlemont Trend, de-risks adjacent prospects, and follows the earlier Essington discovery.
Located near existing infrastructure, the site strengthens the region’s potential for Australia’s east coast gas market.
The project is led by ConocoPhillips (51%), with Korea National Oil (29%) and 3D Energi (20%).
No decision has been made on future drilling.
