China unveils domestic mass production of T1000-grade carbon fiber, a breakthrough material five times stronger than steel.
China has become the first nation to mass-produce T1000-grade carbon fiber domestically, unveiling a large-scale facility in Datong, Shanxi Province on January 15, 2026.
Developed by the Chinese Academy of Sciences and Huayang Carbon Material Technology, the project converts coal into ultra-strong, lightweight fibers—5 to 6 micrometers in diameter—capable of withstanding over 6,600 MPa of tensile strength, five times stronger than steel yet weighing only a quarter as much.
The breakthrough, achieved after decades of research, marks China’s entry into the global high-end carbon fiber market, previously dominated by U.S. and Japanese firms, and establishes a fully indigenous production chain for use in aerospace, high-speed rail, wind energy, electric vehicles, and other advanced industries.
