China tests homegrown undersea robot in South China Sea, collecting key data on resources.
China has launched its first homegrown undersea drilling robot, successfully testing it in the South China Sea at 1,264 meters depth.
Developed by the Guangzhou Marine Geological Survey, the robot performed three-dimensional drilling and real-time in-situ monitoring, collecting over 2,000 data points on methane, oxygen, and seabed structure.
Equipped with AI navigation, inertial systems, and modular design, it autonomously navigated complex terrain, overcoming limitations in mobility and data transmission.
The advance supports China’s deep-sea resource exploration goals, including gas hydrates and rare-earth elements.
