China restores 180,000+ ancient waterlogged bamboo slips, revealing key historical texts.
The Jingzhou Cultural Relics Protection Center has restored over 180,000 waterlogged bamboo and wooden slips from ancient Chinese tombs and wells using two innovative techniques: sodium dithionite decolorization to reveal inscriptions and cetyl alcohol filling to strengthen fragile material.
These slips, some over 2,000 years old, contain vital historical texts including the earliest known Nine-Nine Multiplication Table, a lost version of The Analects of Confucius, and ancient medical prescriptions.
The center restores more than 80% of China’s waterlogged slips, a process taking two to three years per batch, and has earned national recognition for preserving key evidence of China’s cultural continuity.
Similar artifacts have been found in Japan, South Korea, and the UK.
