AWS launched a sovereign European cloud on Jan. 15, 2026, with EU-based data centers and strict data control.
On January 15, 2026, Amazon Web Services introduced the AWS European Sovereign Cloud, a legally and physically distinct cloud infrastructure located solely in Europe, beginning with a data center in Brandenburg, Germany.
It is built to adhere to stringent data sovereignty regulations, functions independently of U.S. systems, has leadership, staff, and controls based in the EU, and has improved legal and technical protections.
The service is supported by more than €7.8 billion in investment, allows full data residency within the EU, and provides low-latency access through new Local Zones in Belgium, the Netherlands, and Portugal.
It seeks to give European companies and governments sovereign control over private information while preserving access to AWS's complete range of cloud and artificial intelligence services.
