Yemen’s president demands closure of illegal southern prisons and release of detainees after STC's dissolution.
On January 12, 2026, Yemeni President Rashad Al-Alimi demanded the closure of all "illegal" prisons in southern Yemen and the immediate release of arbitrarily detained individuals, following the UAE-backed Southern Transitional Council’s (STC) announcement on January 9 of its dissolution after a month of conflict with government and Saudi-backed forces.
The STC and other armed groups, including the Yemeni government and Houthis, have been accused of operating secret detention sites, according to Human Rights Watch and the Associated Press.
The rights group urged authorities and international actors to ensure detainee releases, preserve evidence, and grant access to independent investigators for secret and informal detention facilities linked to UAE-backed forces.
