Wichita Falls ISD to close Jefferson Elementary due to $2.4M shortfall from renovation costs.
The Wichita Falls Independent School District plans to close Jefferson Elementary at the end of the 2025-2026 school year due to a $2.4 million budget shortfall, partly from $12 million in renovations to McNiel Junior High School, only $10 million of which was covered by a tax note.
The district will retain ownership of the Jefferson campus and is opening McNiel Elementary.
Superintendent Donny Lee warned the closure could force the district to dip into its $57 million rainy day fund, risking a balanced budget.
A closing ceremony is planned, but no date has been set.
