The UK is rolling out a new MMRV vaccine for children, adding chickenpox protection to routine immunisations.
Children in Cambridgeshire are now receiving a new combined MMRV vaccine that includes protection against chickenpox, marking the first time the NHS has added the varicella vaccine to its routine childhood immunisations.
Dosing schedules vary by birth date, with children born on or after January 1, 2025, getting doses at 12 and 18 months.
The second MMR dose is now given at 18 months instead of age three, offering earlier protection.
Children born between 2020 and 2022 who haven’t had chickenpox or the vaccine will be offered a dose between November 2026 and March 2028.
Parents will be contacted by their GP.
Health officials stress chickenpox can be severe for adults, pregnant women, infants, and immunocompromised individuals, and the rollout aims to reduce disease spread and hospitalisations.
