Ontario approves Canada Nickel’s Crawford Project, paving way for North America’s largest nickel mine, 4,000 jobs, and a net-zero carbon mine by 2026.
Ontario has designated Canada Nickel’s Crawford Nickel Project as its second development under the One Project, One Process framework, streamlining permitting and boosting coordination across ministries.
The project, located in northern Ontario, is poised to become North America’s largest nickel sulphide mine, create 4,000 jobs, and support domestic battery metal supply chains.
It’s the first Canadian mining project to submit an impact statement under the 2019 amended Impact Assessment Act and has been referred to the federal Major Projects Office.
The company plans to begin construction by year-end 2026, with the project expected to generate $70 billion in GDP over 40+ years and feature patented carbon-capturing technology that could make it the world’s first net-zero carbon nickel mine.
