A new wooden galleon is being built for London’s Diana playground, set to reopen in summer 2026 with inclusive, sustainable upgrades.
A new 12-meter-tall wooden galleon, the centerpiece of a £3 million renovation to the Diana, Princess of Wales Memorial Playground in London, is nearing completion in Germany. Built by the same team behind the original 2000 structure, it uses sustainably sourced mountain larch wood from the Bavarian Alps for durability and resistance to rot. The galleon features a tunnel slide, two crow’s nests, and an accessible ramped entrance. The playground, closed since autumn 2025, will reopen in summer 2026 with updated play areas including a treehouse, redesigned water features, and a dedicated under-threes zone. The Royal Parks say the project honors Diana’s legacy by creating a safe, imaginative, and inclusive space for children, emphasizing sustainability, durability, and long-term public enjoyment.
