Ireland’s leaders clash over top public execs’ pay hikes amid worker wage concerns.
In January 2026, Ireland’s Taoiseach Micheál Martin and Sinn Féin leader Mary Lou McDonald clashed over proposed pay hikes for top executives at semi-state bodies, including up to €75,000 for the Irish Rail chief.
McDonald condemned the increases, noting many workers earn under €45,000 and received no pay or tax relief, calling the moves out of touch with ordinary citizens.
Martin defended the decisions, stating they were made by an independent body to address recruitment challenges in vital public services.
He highlighted record employment over 2.8 million, 3% real wage growth, and increased spending on health, education, and disability services, along with cost-of-living supports like free school meals and books.
