Georgia bans local gun storage laws, allowing lawsuits against cities enforcing them.
Georgia lawmakers have passed Senate Bill 204, banning cities from regulating firearm storage in vehicles, including Savannah’s ordinance that fined or jailed those leaving guns in unlocked cars.
The bill, approved 32-21 along party lines, prohibits local gun storage rules and allows gun owners to sue municipalities for at least $25,000 in damages if such laws are enforced.
The legislation follows a Chatham County judge’s ruling that Savannah’s ordinance was unconstitutional and comes amid debate over public safety versus state preemption.
The bill now awaits Governor Brian Kemp’s signature.
