A Fort Lauderdale police officer shot a dog Tuesday morning after it entered a home, killed a pet rabbit and cat, and bit the officer during a confrontation.
The incident occurred around 7:40 a.m. at the 2800 block of Southwest 8th Street.
Officers arrived to find the dog with the dead rabbit in its mouth, which dropped it before attacking an officer, who was bitten on the forearm.
The dog was injured and fled but was later found with help from animal control.
The officer sustained minor injuries and was treated at a hospital.
The homeowner, Katia Rodriguez, said she tried to defend her rabbit, Snowball, with a broom.
The dog’s owner has not been identified, and the case is under investigation by the department’s Animal Crimes Unit.
Video from a neighbor’s doorbell camera and the homeowner’s phone captured parts of the incident.
