Digvijaya Singh won't run for third Rajya Sabha term, stepping down to boost Dalit representation.
Veteran Congress leader Digvijaya Singh announced he will not seek a third term in the Rajya Sabha, with his current term ending April 9, 2026.
The decision follows a call from Pradeep Ahirwar, head of the Madhya Pradesh Congress SC Department, urging the party to prioritize Scheduled Caste representation in the upper house.
Ahirwar cited the need for social balance and greater Dalit political participation, noting SCs make up about 17% of the state’s population.
Singh, who served as Madhya Pradesh’s chief minister from 1993 to 2003 and has been in the Rajya Sabha since 2014, said he is stepping down, though the final decision is not entirely his.
The move reflects internal party efforts to promote inclusivity and generational change.
